Hotels on South Tyrol’s Wine Road:

pure enjoyment

Wine, wine culture and enjoyment along the South Tyrolean Wine Road

Our two properties, Ansitz Angerburg in Appiano and Das Badl in Caldaro, are located along the South Tyrolean Wine Road in the Oltradige region, one of South Tyrol's traditional wine-growing areas.

The landscape around our hotels is characterised by vineyards, apple orchards, historic residences and a mild Mediterranean climate. Wine growing has been part of the culture and everyday life of the region for centuries.

Discover South Tyrolean wines

Around Appiano and Caldaro, numerous grape varieties are cultivated to produce distinctive South Tyrolean wines, including Lagrein, Vernatsch and Gewürztraminer.

Wine is therefore also an important part of the experience at our properties. At dinner, we are happy to recommend a suitable wine to accompany your meal and, if you wish, share our recommendations for wines from the region.

Our bars also offer a selection of South Tyrolean wines by the glass, wines from other Italian regions and wines from international wine-growing areas.

Wine tastings in Caldaro

At Das Badl in Caldaro, we also regularly organise wine tastings in cooperation with the Caldaro Tourist Association.

This gives you the opportunity not only to taste regional wines, but also to learn more about their origins, grape varieties and the wine culture of South Tyrol.

During your stay, explore the South Tyrolean Wine Road, visit wineries and wine cellars in the surrounding area and discover the diversity of wines from Appiano and Caldaro.

The wine village of Kaltern

Caldaro – wine village on the South Tyrolean Wine Road

Caldaro on the South Tyrolean Wine Road is closely connected with South Tyrol's wine-growing tradition. The village is surrounded by vineyards, historic wine estates and wineries, which shape the landscape around Lake Caldaro.

The region is particularly known for Kalterersee, a traditional South Tyrolean wine made from the Vernatsch (Schiava) grape. Many other grape varieties are also cultivated around Caldaro, including Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Cabernet, Merlot and Lagrein.

Wine tastings – meet South Tyrolean winemakers

If you would like to experience South Tyrol's wine culture first-hand, you can visit various wineries and wine estates around Caldaro and take part in wine tastings.

A special experience is a visit to Lieselehof, where you can explore the vineyard museum before enjoying a wine tasting in the estate's cellar.

On request, we can also arrange visits and wine tastings at some of our favourite wineries in Caldaro, including Weingut Niklas, Weingut Thomas Pichler, Weingut Thomas Unterhofer and Weingut Peter Sölva. The wineries are easily accessible from Das Badl in Caldaro.

This allows you to discover the wines where they are produced and learn more about grape varieties, wine production and South Tyrolean wine culture.

During your stay in Caldaro, explore the South Tyrolean Wine Road, meet local winemakers and discover the variety of wines produced around Lake Caldaro.

Experiencing Caldaro also means discovering wine, meeting winemakers and enjoying the taste of South Tyrol.

Fine wines from Eppan and Kaltern

Here, you will find a small selection of our fine wines, which will not only taste delicious during your holiday in South Tyrol's south, but also back at home.

Vernatsch (red wine)

A light, fruity wine from Vernatsch grapes, the oldest indigenous red wine in South Tyrol. This wine is known for its bright to strong ruby-red colour and cherry, currant, and almond aroma as well as delicate hint of violets. Dry, soft, and, at the same time, with a robust structure.

Ideal with pasta, smoked dishes, and light main courses.

Tip for enjoyment: Always enjoy chilled, 12-14°C is ideal!

Lagrein (red wine)

One of the most important indigenous wines of South Tyrol. For many years, it has represented South Tyrol in its colour and depth, with a ruby-red to dark garnet colour, and aroma of violets and blackberries. Full and velvety taste and beloved in our hotel on South Tyrol’s Wine Road.

Ideal with meat dishes, savoury appetisers, and full-flavoured cheeses.

Gewürztraminer (white wine)

Gewürztraminer is one of the most sought-after wines in South Tyrol. It is a straw-coloured to golden, aromatic, full-bodied white wine with a pleasant dry, slightly full-flavoured aroma. Besides a spicy bouquet, hints of carnations, roses, and lychees are also noticeable.

Ideal with risotto, seafood, shellfish, and crustaceans as well as savoury cheeses.

Organic white wine

Close to our hotel in Kaltern, the Bronner grape is cultivated and used for the “Julian” organic wine of the Lieselehof farm. Intensively golden in colour, its fragrance is redolent of fruit blossoms, peaches, lychees, and grapefruit. A full-bodied wine with good strength and very complex structure.

Ideal with aperitifs, fish, and Asian cuisine.

Rosé

Kretzer or Rosé is a pink to light ruby-red wine with a delicate, pleasant aroma. It has a stimulating fresh flavour, and goes well with hearty appetisers, smoked fish, white meat, and vegetarian dishes.

You can buy local wines from Kaltern at the large winery cooperatives, in local wine shops, and also at the numerous smaller producers, as well as here in our hotels on South Tyrol’s Wine Road.
